HbA1c blood test in Abu Dhabi: what the result reflects

An HbA1c test in Abu Dhabi can support a diabetes assessment or monitoring plan, but it is not a real-time glucose reading. Confirm the clinical purpose, the rest of the order and who will review the result. Do not use this page to diagnose diabetes or change medicines.

01

Why is HbA1c different from today's glucose?

HbA1c reflects glucose exposure over about two to three months through haemoglobin in red blood cells. Fasting or random glucose measures a different time frame. If both are requested, do not substitute one for the other because their names sound similar.

  • Check whether the order is for monitoring, screening or further investigation.
  • Keep previous dated results for the clinical review.

Does this appointment require fasting?

HbA1c alone normally does not. A visit that also includes fasting glucose or other markers may require different preparation. Ask about the whole request, especially if fasting could affect the safe use of your medicines; the responsible clinician should give those instructions.

  • Confirm all tests being collected, not only HbA1c.
  • Do not miss or change diabetes medicine on your own.
03

What if HbA1c does not fit my other readings?

Tell the clinician rather than selecting the more reassuring number. Conditions affecting red blood cells or haemoglobin can affect HbA1c, and other health circumstances also matter. The clinician may review the method, request confirmation or use another glucose test.

  • Share relevant conditions, symptoms and recent treatment changes.
  • Ask what the discrepancy means before changing the care plan.

Common questions

Is HbA1c the same as a fasting blood sugar test?

No. HbA1c reflects average glucose over a longer period, while fasting glucose measures a specific point after the instructed fast.

When might HbA1c not match other glucose results?

Anaemia and some other red-cell or haemoglobin conditions can affect HbA1c accuracy; pregnancy, kidney or liver disease can also affect interpretation. Tell the clinician about relevant conditions and bring previous results. They may use another glucose test or confirmation rather than changing treatment from HbA1c alone. Home collection still needs provider confirmation.
