CAPITAL LAB GUIDE
Prepare for a lab test without guessing
Preparing for a lab test in Abu Dhabi begins with a complete, readable request and instructions for every specimen on it. There is no single routine for all blood tests. Resolve questions before travelling or arranging home collection, and tell the team if preparation did not go as planned.

How do I turn the request into a preparation checklist?
Ask the provider to confirm test names, specimen types, collection timing and any restrictions. Include medicines and supplements in that conversation. Instructions for a urine specimen or a timed investigation may differ from those for a routine blood draw.
- Get instructions for the whole order in a language you understand.
- Ask who can answer a preparation question before collection.

What if fasting is required or I break the fast?
Follow the specified duration and ask what is permitted; plain water is usually allowed during an instructed fast. If you eat or drink something else, explain what and when before collection. The provider can decide whether the particular tests can proceed.
- Do not lengthen a fast to compensate for a mistake.
- Ask for individual advice if fasting could be difficult or unsafe for you.
What should be ready on collection day?
Have the request, identity details and agreed instructions available. Mention fainting with needles, difficult previous draws or changes since booking. If the sample cannot be collected as planned, ask which step needs changing rather than improvising a different preparation routine.
- Confirm the appointment or collector and the report-delivery route.
- Ask whether a changed order affects preparation or the quote.
Common questions
Can I drink coffee while fasting?
If fasting is required, plain water is generally the permitted drink unless your provider gives different instructions. Confirm for the exact test.
What if I ate or drank during the instructed fast?
Tell the provider what you had and when before the sample is taken. They can decide whether to proceed or reschedule for the exact order. Do not hide the mistake, extend the fast yourself or stop medicines to compensate.
