CAPITAL LAB GUIDE
When a lab test is referred to another laboratory
If a test collected in Abu Dhabi will be performed elsewhere, ask for the referral pathway before agreeing to collection. The receiving laboratory, specimen requirements, full quote and report-review responsibility all matter. A referral may be appropriate, but this website does not confirm a particular laboratory or guaranteed delivery time.

Which organisation will actually perform the test?
The place taking a sample may not perform every investigation itself. Ask whether the requested test is referred and which laboratory will process it. This is a question about the pathway, not evidence by itself that either provider is better or worse.
- Keep the exact test name on the request and quote.
- Ask who can clarify a laboratory comment after reporting.

What needs agreement before the specimen is taken?
Confirm whether the test requires a particular container, collection time or handling that limits the available settings. Ask the provider for the expected reporting interval and all collection, transport or administration charges. An estimate should not be presented as a guaranteed deadline.
- Ask what happens if the sample is unsuitable or another specimen is needed.
- Confirm who provides updates if the reporting estimate changes.
How is the referral completed for the patient?
Agree how the final report reaches you and the ordering clinician, and which service coordinates a result query or follow-up appointment. Keep the performing-laboratory details with the report. Do not assume that specimen collection also includes a specialist consultation.
- Check whether results arrive together or in separate reports.
- Confirm a private contact route rather than sharing reports publicly.
Common questions
Does referral mean the first laboratory is lower quality?
No. Referral often reflects specialised capability or processing needs. The important questions are who performs the test and how quality, transport and reporting are managed.
Can referral testing change the price or reporting time?
Yes. Confirm the performing laboratory, full quote and expected—not guaranteed—reporting time before collection. Ask who gives updates if the estimate changes, who receives the final report and whether transport, administration or a repeat specimen could add charges.
