Practical questions

Allergy blood tests: total IgE or a specific allergen?

An allergy blood test is not a universal list of everything your body should avoid. Total IgE and tests for particular allergens answer different questions. Before requesting a large panel in Abu Dhabi, explain what happened, what you were exposed to and how soon symptoms developed.

General information for adults. Not a substitute for medical assessment.

Match testing to the reaction history

A specific IgE test looks at response to a named allergen; total IgE is broader and does not identify the trigger by itself. Ask which allergens are clinically relevant. A larger list can generate confusing findings and does not replace an assessment of whether a suspected exposure actually caused the symptoms.

Interpret a positive finding carefully

A positive blood result needs to be considered alongside symptoms and other assessment. It does not by itself tell you how severe a future reaction would be. Do not start extensive food exclusions or deliberately try a suspected trigger at home to prove the report right or wrong.

Keep emergency care separate from testing

Breathing difficulty, collapse or a suspected severe allergic reaction is an emergency, not a reason to wait for an allergy panel. For non-emergency questions, bring the symptom timeline, medicine list and any existing reaction plan. Confirm who will explain the result before selecting additional tests.

Common questions

Can total IgE identify my trigger?

Not by itself. The history and relevant specific testing matter.

Does a positive result predict reaction severity?

Not reliably on its own; discuss interpretation with the clinician.

Should I test a suspected food at home?

Do not deliberately provoke a reaction; seek an appropriate clinical plan.

Sources and information limits

Questions before arranging an appointment?

Enquire about the next steps and availability. An enquiry does not confirm a booking or diagnosis and is not an emergency service.
