Practical questions

Considering a PSA test in Abu Dhabi: discuss the trade-offs

A PSA test is not a yes-or-no diagnosis of prostate cancer. If it appears in a health package, ask whether it is appropriate for you and what a higher result would lead to. Screening is a decision to discuss, not an automatic benefit of the largest package.

General information for adults. Not a substitute for medical assessment.

Know the possible benefit and harm

PSA can be raised by cancer and noncancerous prostate conditions. Screening may detect a problem, but can also lead to further investigations for findings that would never cause harm. Ask the clinician to discuss personal risk, uncertainty and what you would want to do with an abnormal result.

Confirm preparation instead of guessing

Tell the team about relevant symptoms, recent procedures and medicines. Obtain the preparation instructions for the specific collection, including activities that may affect PSA. Do not stop prescribed treatment or arrange a test immediately before a planned review without checking that the timing is suitable.

Separate screening from symptom assessment

Urinary symptoms or blood in urine deserve clinical assessment; purchasing a screening panel is not a replacement. After testing, retain the full report and prior values. Ask who reviews it and whether repeat testing or another assessment is appropriate, without assuming a high value proves cancer or a low value rules it out.

Common questions

Does high PSA prove cancer?

No. Further clinical assessment may be needed to establish the cause.

Should everyone buy PSA screening?

Discuss suitability and trade-offs with a clinician rather than using a universal package rule.

Is a normal value a reason to ignore symptoms?

No. Persistent or concerning symptoms still need assessment.
