Blood-test interpretation
CBC and Ferritin: Different Questions About Iron
Fatigue does not automatically mean iron deficiency. A complete blood count (CBC) and ferritin can contribute different information to a clinical assessment, but neither replaces the history and examination. If you are arranging blood tests in Abu Dhabi, ask what question each requested marker answers before buying a broad panel or starting iron supplements.
General information for adults. Not a substitute for medical assessment.

Understand what a CBC measures
A CBC reports information about red cells, white cells and platelets, including haemoglobin. It can provide clues that need further assessment rather than identify every cause of fatigue. Ask which finding is important in your report and whether it relates to your symptoms. An abnormal flag should be interpreted alongside other results, not treated as a final diagnosis.
Separate iron stores from the blood count
Ferritin testing helps assess stored iron. It is not the same measurement as haemoglobin, and the results can require additional context, including inflammation or other illness. Ask why ferritin has been requested and whether other iron markers are relevant. A result that seems normal should not be used alone to dismiss persistent symptoms or decide that no follow-up is necessary.
Share symptoms and possible contributors
Tell the clinician about symptom duration, dietary changes, bleeding, pregnancy and any relevant medicines or supplements. Bring earlier results if available. Do not start iron because a friend’s fatigue improved with it; too much iron can also be harmful. The point of testing is to clarify an appropriate next step, not simply to validate a supplement you have already chosen.

Confirm preparation and follow-up
Ask for instructions for the full set of tests, because another marker may change preparation. Confirm how the results reach you and who interprets them. If a repeat is suggested, ask what has changed and what timing makes it useful. Severe breathlessness, chest pain, collapse or significant bleeding requires urgent care rather than waiting for a routine blood-test appointment.

Common questions
Does a CBC measure iron stores?
Not directly. Ferritin and other iron tests may answer additional questions when a clinician considers them appropriate.
Should I take iron for fatigue before testing?
Do not assume iron is the cause or the right treatment. Discuss symptoms and supplementation with a clinician.
Does a high ferritin prove iron overload?
Not by itself. The clinician interprets it with the history and other findings.
