Practical questions

Electrolyte tests: sodium and potassium need context

Electrolytes help the body’s nerves, muscles and fluid balance. A blood panel is a measurement, not a recipe for a sports drink or supplement. When reviewing sodium or potassium results, the requesting clinician needs the symptoms, medicines and collection context as well as the number.

General information for adults. Not a substitute for medical assessment.

Check what the panel includes

Panel names can conceal different lists. Ask whether the order includes sodium, potassium, chloride, bicarbonate or other requested minerals, rather than assuming every electrolyte is present. Bring the actual request when comparing a package with an individual test. More components are not automatically more appropriate.

Explain changes in health and treatment

Mention vomiting, diarrhoea, fluid restrictions, relevant kidney or heart problems and current medicines. Do not stop a prescribed medicine or force extra water to alter the report. If the laboratory requests another sample, ask what collection issue or clinical question the repeat is intended to address.

Act on the agreed urgency

Ask how a concerning result is communicated and who can explain the next step. Do not self-correct a flagged potassium value with potassium tablets or a restrictive diet. Severe weakness, confusion, collapse or concerning heartbeat symptoms warrant prompt assessment; use emergency care when symptoms may be life-threatening.

Common questions

Does every kidney panel contain the same electrolytes?

No. Check the listed markers against the clinical order.

Should I drink excessive water before the test?

No. Follow the instructions and any existing fluid restriction.

Can supplements correct a flagged result safely?

Do not self-treat; the cause and urgency need clinical review.

Sources and information limits

Sources support general medical principles, not the UAE booking policies or service availability. Confirm instructions and local arrangements with the care provider. The update date does not claim clinician review.
